Description
The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee railroad was known for it's high-speed interurban service between Chicago and Milwaukee but also operated a lucrative freight service. Locomotive 455 is a prime example of the railroads inovative operations. It was able to operate with standard trolley poles drawing power off the main line overhead wire but was also equiped with batteries that allowed it to work industrial service sidings without overhead wire. Because of their carload interchange options with four other mainline railroads, industries were encourage to locate along the North Shore Line. The North Shore Line wasn't able to compete with the heavily subsidized Interstate Highway System built during the 1950's and was abandoned in 1963. Many of the passenger fleet cars have been preserved at museums around the country but sadly none of these inovative freight units survived the abandonment.
