Description
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, southeast of Billings Montana, memorializes one of the last armed efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life. On a hot June day in 1876 over 260 soldiers, under the command of General George Armstrong Custer were defeated and killed in what became known as "Custers Last Stand". Although the Indians won this battle they subsequently lost the war and their nomadic, independent way of life.
